OMG I hate when I see products that say 'Diet' 'No sugar added' 'zero calories' 'blah blah blah' tricking innocent people that don't know any better into thinking its a "healthier" choice. it is quite the opposite!
When you see a soda that says diet/zero cal/no sugar (like Coke ZERO!!) thats because instead of regular table sugar (sucrose) it is loaded with artificial sweeteners. which most certainly does not make it "healthier". It just gives the product the right to say "No Sugar added" or "Diet". STOPPPPPP!! don't drink it! artificial sweeteners are exactly as they are named. ARTIFICIAL. its like introducing an alien into your body. it has no idea what it is or what to do with it. So it stores it into your fat, making it harder to burn off with exercise.
Now obviously soda is not the best option for anyone who is trying to lose weight/body fat. For me personally, I gave up soda all together about 4 years ago. I sometimes will have a sip of my husbands (because he refuses to stop). But after telling him that Diet soda is worse then regular and him not listening to me (shocker) I had his best friend who is a nutritionist, body builder and personal trainer convince him that im not full of **** and voila. he no longer drinks diet. lol
here are some FDA approved art. sweet.
Acesulfame potassium (Sunett, Sweet One)
Aspartame (Equal, NutraSweet)
Neotame
Saccharin (SugarTwin, Sweet'N Low)
Sucralose (Splenda)
artificial sweeteners are not just in soda. You can find it in just about anything. So teach yourself to spot these things before its to late. learn to read ingredients labels and Nutritional Values on products.

I'm all about real sugar! LOL I do drink Coke Zero every now & again though.
The products are a bit misleading and most people are too lazy to take some time and learn about the products.

"artificial sweeteners are exactly as they are named. ARTIFICIAL. its like introducing an alien into your body. it has no idea what it is or what to do with it. So it stores it into your fat, making it harder to burn off with exercise."
I'd like to see some scientific evidence for that claim.

I'm not seeing scientific evidence to justify any of these claims, quite frankly...

There's plenty of studies to the contrary. Some artificial sweeteners pass through. Others break down. I haven't seen any actual medical studies about them being stored in fat. I can see where someone would draw that (unfounded) conclusion though as certain "toxins" are fat soluble and are stored in the fat cells. THC is a good example.
Searching the internets just yields more speculative pages without sources. I don't have access to pubmed or I'd look there first.

If you want to jump on the hype bandwagon, in the USA non-diet sodas are normally made with high frutcose corn syrup (HFCS) rather than "sugar", which if you believe other online scaremongering is also the work of the devil. (Here in the UK they use real sugar, because our agricultural subsidies are different to those in the US so it's cheaper than HFCS).
But drinking water rather than soda, and not drinking 32 fluid ounces of anything in one sitting, is probably the healthiest option really :-)

Aspartame is probably the best known artificial sweetener. It is actually made of two amino acids; Aspartic Acid and Phenyl-alanine - which are essential amino acids. However, the two are joined together in a different way to the normal peptide bond, so Aspartame is not a "protein".
In the test tube, Aspartame breaks down in a way that produces formaldehyde and formaldehyde has been shown to cause cancer in rats. There is no evidence, whatsoever, that formaldehyde is produced by the breakdown of aspartame in the cells of the body, and there is no evidence that aspartame causes cancer in humans - or indeed (directly) in rats. The FDA approved Aspartame as safe for human consumption and, although this has been challenged in courts by several interested-parties, the FDA has reviewed the evidence and found no indication that Aspartame is dangerous in humans.
This has not stopped the lobbyists.
Incidentally, the chemical composition of Inverted Fructose Syrup and the chemical composition of honey is very, very similar. One is universally condemned, the other is sold as a health-food. To the body, they are essentially identical...
Like everything else, the key word is moderation. Even vitamins can be dangerous in large doses (with the possible exception of Vitamin C for which the only counter-indication I know of is that it is acidic (Ascorbic Acid) - but not sufficiently so to cause a problem). Vitamin A is highly toxic, B vitamins and D vitamins can both cause disease states and birth defects. You would also die without them...
Kind Regards
Dave

Which is why when the rare time comes about that I actually want a Coke, I get the mexican bottled Coke. Cane sugar and it tastes so much better.
But that's a pretty rare occurrence for me.

Sorry i totally forgot i posted this thread! took forever to post back. my bad. as for searching the web i dunno what sources could be found but i got most of the info from a book called Fatland: How Americans Became the Fattest People in the World. by Greg Critser. Its a really good book and i recommend it. It has a lot in there about HFCS and when and why we started using it in so many products. and as for the actual scientific studies of the sweeteners I don't remember specifics (I used the book for a paper a few years ago). all his sources are listed in his book.

Exactly true! Sugar itself is not bad, its the QUANTITY that people consume that is bad. The body needs sugar from HEALTHY CARBS to maintain energy. Complex carbs are processed slower and the sugar stays in the bloodstream to be used for energy.
Too much of it can lead to obvious ailments and weight gain but so can consuming to much of ANY food.
