So throughout college I have had a few friends who have tried the P90x routine/workout plan and have seen phenomenal results, but the tradeoff is that it is an intense, high energy workout that requires dedication (which I am indeed no stranger to).

For some reason I have been deterred from trying it as the cost to get the DVDs for the Workout Plan and of course if I were to try it in my apartment, my neighbor below me would probably get pissed off.

Have any of our JEFIT Members tried out P90x? What kind of results have you seen from the workout itself? Are there others who want to try the p90x workout but deterred just like me?

I like the sound of P90X from what i've heard, but it's an american thing, so i don't know much
Is it all about weight loss an toning or does it involve bulking aswell?

It's a H.I.I.T. type workout. http://www.beachbody.com/product/fitness_programs/p90x.do?t=p90x2b2

I've watched the first DVD. Made me tired. That's as far as I went. It was more my lack of commitment at the time than anything else.

from the looks of most of them before and after pictures, 90% of them are just standing pushing it out etc in the before, then in a better pose, smiling and tensing in the after

That's likely because they suggest you already be working out when you start. It is VERY intense. Still I'll stick to weight lifting and a lil cardio. :)

I tied the P90X for a week and then went back to my old routine, after figuring out what the P90X is all about.

The P90X is good if you want to lose weight and tone your muscles. It is very intense and it has to be done 6 days a week with only 1 day of rest.

The reason it didn't work out for me is because I like my jogging and play team sports 2 times a week, and doing the P90X is not compatible with jogging or playing other sports because it gets you soooo tired, it has "cardio" built into it, and didn't leave me any energy to do anything else.

If you're already in your ideal weight, then it's just better to have a gym routine that will let you focus on specific muscles, instead of doing an all-rounder to lose weight and tone up.

That's my 2 cents ;)

Yeah that is the one thing that I noticed is it is for the person who wants to have that 8 pack and super toned body so when they rip their shirt off, women instantly jump over to them and wash clothes on their washboard abs haha.

I really want to try P90X for that HIIT style of training that it offers to become more toned out and lose extra weight and a bit of my muffin top haha, hate it all and I do enjoy cardio but couldn't beat doing HIIT for 6 days a week with 1 day of rest. Sounds like a plan to me on top of my bulking routine that I do 6 days a week ahha.

I don't blame you though maurinet as you can keep your own pace with jogging and playing sports from time to time and schedule it all out. With P90X it really seems like there isn't any breaks at all during your time with the program until it is finally finished, which isn't bad but you have to keep committed to it. That is dedication right there but for some of us, myself and you included, it is easier to structure out your cardio and sports playing to make it easier.

I still really want to give it a try, I want those 6-8 pack abs and look extremely ripped

I did p90x for a few weeks, i noticed myself getting stronger and being able to keep up with the guys on the dvd, if you do decide to do it, i would suggest a decent selection of dumbbells, for the things you really want to hammer or feel like cutting back on.
you most likely will find a set of the dvds on craigslist

I did it last summer. We went up to day 84 or so... I wasn't interested in the recovery week at the end. I lost five pounds in the first week and then nothing after that. I did get stronger and in good shape though. After p90x I was finally able to curl a lot more.

I'm sure I would have lost more weight if I had paid attention to diet more but from being a swimmer for so long its really hard to break the habit of I'm working out I can eat everything I see and not worry about it.

Things like P90X and the Insanity workouts focus on strength/endurance. The high intensity workouts burn calories but the real results come from a combination of nutrition/resistance (meaning ANYTHING that pits your body against something else)/rest.

If I was wanting to change my body composition to lower the %of fat (not weight...) I'd probably pick the Insanity workout due to it never needing equipment (less is more).

Full-body workouts, however, are far more effective for building muscle than isolating, you "could" split it to an upper/lower body routines but multi-joint workouts (i.e...bench press, military press, squat, deadlift, pull-ups...) will not only build more muscle but add more functional strength than "bodybuilding".

The Insanity workout will offer a different focus on the full-body routines...you can't do it all at once...pick one and focus on it

I think only "special" people can add images in their sigs. You can create your own over at http://www.xboxlc.com (http://www.xboxlc.com/profile/rogo0694)

I tried p90x out for about 2-3 weeks, then went back to my gym routine. I think it's great for people who don't do anything in the evenings, or don't work very much. It would probably be ideal for a student, or parents who stay home every night and put the kids to bed by 8pm.

The things I disliked:
- you need 2 hours a day to get ready, workout, shower, etc
- the food is hard to manage, you have to do specific diets with certain percentages (50 protein, 30 carbs, 20 fat) I used theDailyBurn.com to help me with this, but it meant at least an hour a day preparing food, and groceries non stop
- the workouts aren't fun, I've been going to the gym for years, I enjoy lifting heavy weight.. p90x unless you have a dumbbell set, is going to suck especially with resistance bands.
- it really interferes with your life, I play soccer twice a week at night, and another team sport (dodgeball), we were doing our workouts at 9 or 10pm after these.. which was fine but it basically consumes your whole life.

I gave up after about 3 weeks, I stuck with the diet for a while tho, and that is pretty much the real benefit to p90x, if you stuck with your current workouts and you do cardio, all you need to add is the diet.

That's very true. It is time consuming, but they have great marketing. ;)

As for the groceries, that's the main reason I slacked up on my diet. I can't be bringing home 20lbs of chicken every week plus veggies & sides. And prep time sucks. Healthy food is out there. Just have to know what you can & cannot eat at places.

If you've got limited responsibility (e.g. no wife, no kids, and a true 8-5 job), it's easy. Between my wife, my son, and my always on-call job I seldom have down time. Part of the reason I workout so damn early in the morning.

Just about to finish week 1 of p90x and it is kicing my ass. I do not ever do cardio just lift. And since I am 250lbs and 6'4" that gives some decent resistance. to the exercises.

Like deviation says it is time consuming and and that is why I get up at 4am every morning to do it. And then with all my 12 and 16 hour days latly I. have been a zombie.

Going to try and stick it out cuz come spring time work slows down then I have to be ready to go party at the lake and spend all that hard earned $$$$

Get cut then back to get big

I completed the whole 90 day round of p90x and was pretty good with the diet. I had decent results. Lost about 8 lbs (I would like to have lost more) and I did firm up a bit. However, it was such an intense program that, when I was done, I had major rebound and gained most of the weight back. It is a good program, but I think the major problem is that it is not sustainable and gives little guidance about what to do when you have finished.

I've done p90x and p90x-2, and insanity. I dont understand all the talk about it taking too much time & taking over your life. 60 mins on the two "cardio" days, 75 with the ab ripper routine on resistance days, and 90 mins for yoga (yeah that's long so I did that on my day off.) How long are you spending at the gym? Plus travel time? If it's less than that, you're probably wasting your time.

If you've already got some dumbbells then you're halfway there. If not, buy a pullup bar and a set of their purp/red/green or green/blue/black resistance bands and that's all you'd need. You're not gonna get superbuff. It's high intensity training that will burn calories and expose (and address) your weaknesses. Setting aside the usual adjectives such as "cut", toned, ripped, etcetcWHATEVER, if your goal is to be BETTER - then p90x is going to get it done.

Insanity is a whole 'nother animal. Maintaining a heart rate of 160 for 45 mins. You won't come out with a better bench press. But you'll be jumping higher, running faster and further, and just being a beast at life. I never run, but I recently did a 10k which I ran for about a week prior to prepare. My running friends were astounded at how well I kept up. I credit that cardio strength to insanity.

Takes too much time? Sounds like a whole lot of excuses to me. If this is something you really wanted to do then you'd find time. P90X takes a lot of discipline, determination and dedication. I found that once you start on the P90X band wagon, it's one heck of a ride. I ended up doing 4 rounds of it (Just over a year total) until P90X2 came out, workin' an average of 52 hour work weeks. I just couldn't stop after 1 round. Killer program, killer results, but... you do have to work your a$$ off for them.
It does take over your life in a way however. Everything becomes a quote from Tony Horton. My wife gets soo sick of it ...
