Feeling like this is my last shot

Greetings. My name is John and I have cycled on and off a regular training routine for over 12 years. I am about to be 48 and feel like this is my last shot at getting it right and sticking to it. I picked up the weights again at the first of May and have been consistent for the past 4 weeks. I am finally feeling good about myself again! I have a long way to go but every day is progress. I'm 6'6" tall and weight 235. I don't want to be lean and skinny but also don't want that middle aged gut that most guys my age have. I'm basically cutting out the sugary snacks, minimizing the bread, and trying to maximize protein for my 5 daily meals. I have a family with 2 college aged kids and one teen that loves to eat out. I just don't want to feel like my opportunity to physically peak is over when I hit 50 in a couple of years. My goal is to be in the best shape of my life at 50.

I've been lurking in the forums and you guys are really supportive and have a lot of good advice on nutrition and training. The JEFIT app is awesome for logging and tracking and think the idea of this site is great!

    Welcome to the forums!!!

It's great to see another cyclist!!! Having yesterday completed the Manchester Naked Bike Ride (for which I was determined to get into shape!!!) I'm happy to see from recent posts that there is a small community of cyclists on here! Maybe I should create a thread for us all to introduce ourselves...

Edited to say: Oooops!!! Rereading your post it looks like you're maybe not a cyclist at all, but just used the word to describe your one/off training!!! Ah well... Do consider buying a bike and using it instead of the car to get to the gym etc... It has been the cornerstone of my return to fitness!!!

I have to say that I think it is brilliant that you are seizing this opportunity to improve your fitness and physique with both hands. I will say though that, after recently viewing an image of a bodybuilding competition won by a 90 year old with an amazing physique who started bodybuilding in his 60's (!!!) that it is simply NEVER too late!!!!

And images of a woman bodybuilder with no arms and a male bodybuilder with only one leg and development to die for, just demonstrate that even with disadvantages, we can all turn ourselves around and create something truly special of ourselves with the right dedication.

Let that inspire you to improve! And I hope JEFIT and this community will give you the tools and the inspiration/motivation to reach for your goals!!!

    Welcome!

    Kind Regards
    Dave

    Thanks

Thanks, man, I appreciate it. It definately is inspiring to hear about people in advanced age or with indescribable challenges achieving their bodybuilding goals. Thanks for sharing.

No, I'm not a cyclist but it looks like a really good way to get in shape. I think I'm going to stick to running for the time being for my cardio. I live out in the country so a bike ride would be taking my life in my hands depending on the sobriety of the drivers on the highway.

Anyway, thanks again for the encouragement!
