Made my first batch today. Added 2 fresh strawberries and nothing else.
Quite tasty, but they do take a while to prepare.
Recipe:Soak 8-12 hours or overnight in a saucepan. In the morning, bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer for ~10 minutes. Yields ~3-4 servings. Store in refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- 1 cup steel cut oats (aka Irish Oatmeal)
- 4 cups water
Reheating:
Add a bit of milk or water to thin the oatmeal out. Microwave for 30 seconds on HIGH. Stir and heat for another 20 seconds.
Suggested "add-ins":
- Protein Powder: Warm up the oatmeal PRIOR to adding.
- Fruit (any type you like)
- Honey
- Almonds, Walnuts, Pecans
- Cinnamon (NOT cinnamon sugar)
- Flax Seed (OMEGA POWA!)
- Splenda
They have a really nice flavor to them. Much different than instant/rolled oats. You can add whatever you like, but I keep it simple for carb/calorie reasons. You can also use a slow cooker to make them.
They are other brands that offer shorter cook times without the need to presoak:
McCann's - 5 minutes: http://www.mccanns.ie/p_QuickEasy.html
Bob's Red Mill - 10-20 minutes: http://www.bobsredmill.com/steel-cut-oats.html
I wasn't a fan of the taste of either myself.
There's lots of info on the net, but here's a big, well cited article: http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?t...dspice&dbid=54 Their recipes lack a bit, but the info is good.
