    Steel Cut Oats

Made my first batch today. Added 2 fresh strawberries and nothing else.

Quite tasty, but they do take a while to prepare.

    Recipe:
    • 1 cup steel cut oats (aka Irish Oatmeal)
    • 4 cups water
Soak 8-12 hours or overnight in a saucepan. In the morning, bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer for ~10 minutes. Yields ~3-4 servings. Store in refrigerator for up to 3 days.

    Reheating:
Add a bit of milk or water to thin the oatmeal out. Microwave for 30 seconds on HIGH. Stir and heat for another 20 seconds.

    Suggested "add-ins":
    • Protein Powder: Warm up the oatmeal PRIOR to adding.
    • Fruit (any type you like)
    • Honey
    • Almonds, Walnuts, Pecans
    • Cinnamon (NOT cinnamon sugar)
    • Flax Seed (OMEGA POWA!)
    • Splenda

They have a really nice flavor to them. Much different than instant/rolled oats. You can add whatever you like, but I keep it simple for carb/calorie reasons. You can also use a slow cooker to make them.

They are other brands that offer shorter cook times without the need to presoak:
    McCann's - 5 minutes: http://www.mccanns.ie/p_QuickEasy.html
    Bob's Red Mill - 10-20 minutes: http://www.bobsredmill.com/steel-cut-oats.html
I wasn't a fan of the taste of either myself.

There's lots of info on the net, but here's a big, well cited article: http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?t...dspice&dbid=54 Their recipes lack a bit, but the info is good.

I have always wanted to try Steel Cut Oats but never brought myself to try them because as you have stated, they take a while to get prepared and I am the type of guy who wakes up, showers and wants my oatmeal ready in 5 minutes so I can enjoy some Home Improvement in the morning haha.

But that looks absolutely phenomenal and delicious. I love strawberries or any type of fruit in my oatmeal and for a 3 serving size with all of that fruit will without a doubt make my morning.

I appreciate the recipes though as I want to make something new with my oatmeal, I always have oats, flax seed and cinnamon all together and starting to lose its luster, need a new recipe or something different in my oatmeal

If you soak the oats overnight, its only about 10 mins to make. Not too bad. Give it a try and you won't do instant/quick oats again. If you don't soak them, its about 30-40 mins.

If you store the leftovers in the fridge, add a splash of milk to them before you microwave. Helps loosen them up. Had strawberries again today. Mostly because I have a giant thing of fresh strawberries I need to use!

That actually doesn't sound half bad at all to be honest, I might try it sometime just for the sake of trying new Oatmeal, I usually get the Whole Oats from Harris Teeter for a Giant Container for 2$ so when I see the 6$ for Steel Cut Oats it kind of deters me haha.

I love milk in my oatmeal but I always burn it because I don't monitor my food and just let it cook until it seems right to me. Yeah they said this season has been great strawberry season so you have to get your fill haha

Hey hey not bad at all, chocolate protein powder gives you that added nutrition along with strawberries and everything else that you are putting in. I never thought of putting in protein powder but now going to start trying it with my oatmeal, sounds like it would make it absolutely delicious.

I will routinely make steel cut slow cook oats.

    1 cup of oats
    4 cups of water
    1/2 cup raisins
    1 tsp cinnamon
    spash of vanilla
1 Tbsp of Flax seed powder
    1/4 cup pure honey

add all ingredients to a slow cooker lightly sprayed with cooking spray. Stir well to mix it all together. Set your slow cooker on low for about 4-6 hours before bed and voila...ready made breakfast first thing in the morning.
