The best piece of advice that helped me was written in a forum -

No one knows more about lifting than the likes of Mark Rippetoe, ignore Broscience and follow a programme that is made by someone who actually knows what they are talking about.

The advice was recently reconfirmed to me in this very forum when I asked for advice about changing my programme.
