Setting Goals - Help Wanted Please?

How do I set goals for my measurements (arms etc)? How do I know what measurements to aim for? What are the proportions of an ideal physique given my height etc?

Can anybody advise me please?

Kind Regards
Dave

Cool Getting Started

Hi Dave, As you begin a weight program, I would recommend focusing on getting to know the proper form for several basic lifts that balance your potential for growth across muscle groups (over time, you can add more lifts to build toward your goals): flat bench, squat, deadlift, standing bicep curl, tricep push down, calve raises, seated row, etc. Once you have the movements down, take an initial measurement and record your stats in Jefit.

For growth/loss goals: if you are working for weight/fat loss, subtract 2 inches from your current measurement; for places where you'd like to build, add 2. Initial progess can happen quickly if your consistent with your workouts, and these physical changes are extremely motivating to graph in the app

Sorry, perhaps you misunderstood. I have been weight training for twenty five years (although I've lapsed the last five or so). I don't need advice/understanding about weightlifting itself, I just want to know how to set proportional goals as I feel I look somewhat troll-like at present!!!

Not to laugh at your expense, but I got a chuckle out of that.

I'm not sure there is a goal setting for stats. Would be a nice feature though.

Well, my pectorals pull my shoulders forward, and the shoulders are rounded by the muscle on them. Add to this the layer of fat I need to get rid of, the lack of a waist (same issue!) and male pattern baldness, and I keep expecting to get attacked by vikings....

When you click "Set Goals" it allows you to program desired settings for all major body parts (or at least, those affected by bodybuilding... stop sniggering at the back!).

But there is no indication of how to derive these ideal figures!!! (actually if there are set parameters for this, like the "Greek Ideal" a poster mentioned, it would be useful if the algorithm could be included as an automated feature in the software! Programmers take note...).

Kind Regards
Dave

Guess I completely skipped that step.

The Greek ideals thing is interesting but damn I've got a long way to go on that!

I found this:

http://www.trulyhuge.com/fitnesscalculators.htm

But I've no idea what it is based on or whether it is useful. It seems to me that "ideal proportions" should take into account whether you are an endomorph, ectomorph or mesomorph body type and be proportional to height, waist, hip and shoulder width, although the discussion here:

http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=759699

Relates it to bone/joint diameter...

Can anybody clarify?

Kind Regards
Dave

The first link matches the Greek ideals.
