It kind of looks like bootcamp in the army but except there is like not giant 30 foot wall you have to climb with a rope yet unless they got that for you guys. Running through the tires for me seems like a trek though as my stupid ass would probably stick my foot through the wrong opening or get stuck and fall flat on my face bouncing off of the tires as people tread over me haha.
I'm already anticipating a face plant into some mud. Pretty much a guarantee.

Yeah. I'm gonna be covered.

How are you feeling / recovering with some of the supplements that you are taking? Do you feel like you are gaining more strength and confidence to push yourself to reach those new 1RMs?
Well today's 1RM was accidental. I just got it in my head that I always did 10 reps on the one arm rows. Whoops.

Truthfully, work has been kicking my butt lately. I've put aside a fair portion of strength exercises and resorted to cardio as of late (with the exception of the light stuff last week). It's less time consuming and at least keep me going. Today was the first time in about two weeks I really did any heavy lifting.

As for the supps, I haven't been taking much lately. At most I've been taking two scoops of whey, a nightly casein shake, and Amino Energy. I've also been eating a bit less ~2300-2500 calories. That will change some this week. the calories will be around the same, but I plan on upping the protein a good bit.

Also been meaning to ask, how long of a race is this that you are participating in?
3.1 miles. So a muddy 5k. http://swampstomp.com/ I've never run a 5k let alone one with obstacles.

Just a simple, quick upper body routine. Lighter than usual except the incline press. Cranked it out in about 35 mins including warmup.

DOMS has set in hardcore on my legs. My legs feel abused. Been trying to remember to get up & stretch every hour to see if that helps. Really hoping my upper body doesn't feel this way tomorrow/Saturday.

10-29-2011 - race day

RACE DAY!

Wow was it cold today! When I got up it was 32 degrees and frosty. My wave was at 11am which I thought might help. Not so much.

Woke up at 7am. Had two pieces of whole grain toast with natural peanut butter and honey around 7:30. Had a half a cup of coffee at 8:30 and headed out to drop my son off at the grandparents.

I finally found the place; an angus farm/sod farm. The drive to the parking area was amusing. My car didn't really care for mud and deep ruts in the ground but I made it. Got my race packet and started drinking my Amino Energy around 10:00 (had to be there an hour ahead). My race mate showed up around 10:15 since she got a little lost. Got my bag checked and started chugging my Gatorade gel. Tasty and full of carbs & b vitamins..

I have never run a 5k before. Well any race actually. So to say I was nervous is an understatement. But once you're on the line and you hear "30 seconds" left, you're mind instantly goes to race mode. I was going to run with my race mate. That was the plan, but that didn't pan out. I ended being a good bit faster (she's a runner and has competed before). So I kept my pace and pushed on.

Let me tell you, this race was brutal. I don't care how strong you are. I don't care if you can run 10 miles. The combination of cold weather, ice cold water and mud made this a very tough race. It really tests your endurance. When you have to slide down a 100ft water slide into water and immediately get up a muddy bank, you will feel it. That first obstacle literally knocked the wind out of me with the cold water. But I kept on. Up steep muddy banks using a rope. Through 3-4ft deep water in a creek. Over a pit of fire. Up and down a rope ladder. Bear crawling through tunnels filled halfway with frigid water. Down another slide into water and crawling under REAL barbed wired.

I finished 55th overall out of 162, 32nd out of 58 in the 30-49 age group, and 50th out of 99 males. Finished with a 42:33 time and 13:42/mi pace. I'm happy. I finished without medical attention...LOL. I'm not sure what you do to train for this type of event. But I can tell you it's not what I have been doing!

Ready for the next one!

10-31-2011 - Upper

• Barbell Bench Press - 185.0x5,185.0x5,185.0x5
• Barbell Incline Bench Press - 115.0x5,135.0x5,135.0x5 [new PR; 1RM 157]
• Barbell Bent Over Row - 135.0x10,135.0x10,135.0x15 [new PR; 1RM 202]
• Triceps Pushdown - Rope - 45.0x10,45.0x10,45.0x10
• Dumbbell Incline Fly - 25.0x10,25.0x10,25.0x10
• Alternate Hammer Curls - SKIPPED
• Dumbbell Shoulder Press - SKIPPED
• Pullups - 0.0x10,0.0x10,0.0x10
NOTES
Think I'm still feeling DOMS from the race Saturday. My arms and legs are still stiff.

Not bad, but I did have to skip over hammer curls and presses. I think I strained my right bicep a little on the pushdowns. Decided not to push through it. New PR on bent over rows and incline bench. Kind of stuck at the moment on regular bench though I'm sure I'll get over that soon enough.
Hopefully get myself back into some sort of routine and diet this week.

Good stuff. Slowly getting back up there in squats. Opted to do my M-120 workout after legs today. Gets the heart rate way up there in a really short time (5-6 mins). The cool down is almost mandatory.

Ever have a good bicep day? LOL This week it seems like I've garnered a bit more of a peak than previous. Could just be my imagination.

NOTES
I was so close to pulling off more reps on deadlifts! The last set I couldn't keep the bar in my hands and had to stop. Pretty sure I pulled something in my hands trying to hold on. So wanted to hit more reps. Guess it's time for some straps.

I'm reworking my routine some based on my experience with Swamp Stomp. I've realized that functional strength is more important. What I mean is when you try to climb a wall with just a rope, you quickly realize that exercises like curls (example) aren't going to get you anywhere. So I'm acquiring some new items this weekend and next week to meet this goal. More to come.

I'm also looking at running a 5 mile race later this month. I really enjoy running. Well aside from running on a treadmill. What I've found interesting is that strength training is a HUGE compliment to running. I've mentioned this is prior posts, but when you live in the running world you tend to be focused on running styles and techniques. You don't seem to realize just how important lifting heavy weights on a regular basis is to your performance. At least I didn't.

Kind of odd timing that the day I say I'm changing up to a different style of routine and I see a new video from smittydiesel.

Scientific sports training; I like seeing this type of stuff however could not implement myself or do for a routine on a regular basis; unless I was fighting or something on a semi or professional circuit.

I don't have the area to do all that type of work, but some of that style is going to make it's way into my routine. After running that crazy mudathalon race, I can see the use for this type of work. Not just in those types of event, but elsewhere.
