Here’s a decent discussion on a training shoes that work well for lifting:

A few months ago I did some shopping around and settled on the New Balance Men's MT101. They are comfortable and very light with a low somewhat solid heel. For me they have been great in the gym.

Normal trainers work fine for me maybe it's just your crazy american trainers

If you can get them, and have any idea what they are, get some Astroturf/indoor football boots solid 1 piece bottom, loads of grip abit of protection front and back, perfect for running, balance etc

Actually I am looking at minimalist shoes. I prefer them over traditional running shoes. I tend to strike more heel when I wear regular running/training shoes. When I run barefoot or walk in my Converse, I strike fore/mid foot. Plus for weight lifting they are bit more ideal. Less sole.

Here's the pair I'll be picking up: http://www.saucony.com/store/SiteController/saucony/productdetails?catId=cat10004&productId=4-103840&skuId=***4********20072-8*M150&stockNumber=20072-8&showDefaultOption=true

How are they minimalist? they just look like normal trainers, i always assumed minimalist trainers were basically slightly strengthened socks

They look that way, but the outside sole is a little misleading. There's not much shoe there. Granted they aren't like the Vibram shoes: http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/index.htm

EDIT:
This is Saucony's minimalist shoe: http://www.saucony.com/store/SiteController/saucony/productdetails?catId=cat10004&productId=4-106900&skuId=***4********20126-5*M085&stockNumber=20126-5&showDefaultOption=true&iCID=Static-Minimalism

Thumbs up 07-13-2011

What a day. Day one of my pseudo-vacation. Just now got time to sit in front of the computer and type all this up.
• Barbell Deadlift - 155.0x8,155.0x8,165.0x8,205.0x8 [new PR, 259 1RM]
• Barbell Bent Over Row - 115.0x10,115.0x10,115.0x10,115.0x10
• Straight Arm Push Down - 20.0x10,20.0x10,20.0x10,20.0x10
• One-Arm Dumbell Row - 25.0x10,25.0x10,25.0x10,25.0x10
• One-Arm Dumbell Row - 25.0x10,25.0x10,25.0x10,25.0x10
• Pullups - 0.0x5,0.0x5
• Russian Twist - 10.0x10,10.0x10

So my workout today was great. New PR on deadlifts; 205x8. So a new 1RM of ~259lbs.. That took a bit out of me so I stuck with my typical weights for today's workout. Had a bit of the "IOMS" jshilko joked about in his log. Lower back was really feeling it today and I worked up a great sweat. All good feelings.

After the workout, I spent about 9 hours pressure washing our fence. Got burnt to a crisp and I can barely move my arms. Pretty sure the sunburn has overridden any pain from the workout. Nice way to kick off the vacation time. And to think I have to stain this fence tomorrow. Might wear a trenchcoat...

Knurl marks and new callus forming after my last set of deadlifts:

If you're looking for a shoe that focuses more on the front of your foot, take a look at Vibrams.

http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/

Almost bought a pair for myself, but the guy at Wasatch Running talked me out of it. Basically he said, if you're going to run on more natural surfaces (fields, hiking trails, dirt and mud) get shoes that feel more natural, but if you're using a treadmill or roads you'll need a shoe that's built to handle it.

Vibrams are on the list to check out. Just have to make it to the ONE retailer in my area to try them on.

They're pretty awesome, I tried them out on the treadmill at the store. Just get your calves ready because you'll be running on your forefoot.

Day 3 of vacation. Woke up a few times during the night due to my sunburn. Didn't crawl out of bed until 7am which is really late for me. My sunburn from Wednesday was killing me during the workout since its on my arms and shoulders. All in all not a bad workout. I was able to crank out 3 more reps on the last set of my bench press than last Friday's. Another positive today is that my has apparently gotten bigger. Went to button up my dress shirt today and I couldn't get the top button closed. It's a 16.5" neck size. Hadn't worn a dress shirt in months.

The diet has been pretty rough lately. I seem to eat worse when I'm around the house. Whether it's not eating enough or eating too much of the wrong stuff. Really going to have to crack the whip next week.

Tomorrow I'll hopefully get a run in before I start staining the fence. SPF85+ will be in full effect.

Pic of the Day

Bonus pic of the sunburn...two days later...still hurts like hell
