What are the best kettlebell exercises for someone with weight-training experience but new to kettlebells? What exercise gave you the most benefit when you first started kettlebell training?

I know I’m almost certainly wrong here but KB’s just look like unnecessary tomfoolery to me for the most part. I get farmers carry I guess.

I started with goblet squats, then two-handed KB swings. If I had it to do over again I would have practiced KB deadlifts ahead of the swings, just to really cement my form for bracing and hinging.

Back then I started with 16 kg KB one-arm clean, then I tried to press the KB over head a little and one day I managed to do my first press repetition. The clean exercise prepares you well for KB press even if the kettlebell is a heavy one. You first perform many many cleans until you feel safe with the KB weight. Then you can try to press it - even if you first can press only few cm / one inch, you strength will grow, so you can do full rep and so on. Cleans with two KB are also great.

Swing, clean and push press. Those are basic exercises. This is your starting point. Snatch when you get more advanced. Most important advice: Swing is a hip move, not an arm lift. Arms are ‘chains’, stabilisers, not a movers.

Thanks for that. Great to know what other people’s experiences have been. I worked with dumbbells consistently over the last few years. I was looking to have a bit of a change. I’m enjoying it so far.

Over the years, I found out that hypertrophy training with dumbbells is way more practical and superior than kettlebells. So if I have the choice, I always use dumbbells.
