If the intensity needed to really progress is there, most can do up to 4 days per week. A few can get away with 5, if they really manage recovery, sleep 8h per night, go to bed and wake up at the same time 7 days per week, work in an office, don't stress etc. This is pro level stuff.
3-4 days is what 95% of everyone should aim for.
It is easy to evaluate if you're doing too much. Until you got silly, silly strong you should be stronger each session. You should be able to increase weight and/or reps in at least a few exercises without altering form at all session to session. If so, you're doing excellent and shouldn't change a thing.
If not, you're doing too much. Either per session or per week. But most likely both.
I do 2 on and rest on the 3rd. So 4.33 days per week.

I do 6. Push, Legs, Pull - Rest - Push, Legs, Pull. I do biceps and triceps on the opposite days deliberately, and calves/lateral delts 4x/week. I exist on the edge of being able to recover but have the volume pretty much dialled in at this point and can achieve PO.

6...I do Legs/Shoulders (2 days), Chest/Bicep, Back/Tricep, Back/Chest, and Arms. This allows me to do circuits workout wearing out the muscles prematurely. I can generally keep this up for 6-8 weeks before having to deload

5 days a week (PPL). I used to train 6 days a week. It was too much. I train to near failure, and I try to follow my 6 week schedule and 1 deload week of rest and recovery.

If you can’t recover and/or progress it’s too much
